PowerPoint — Admin….???

So I have never visited elance.com, until today. I had to see what someone told me, and seeing is believing. Now I admit this is a bit personal, but they have categories like:
– Web
– Design & Multimedia
– Admin Support
– Sales & Marketing

And where is PowerPoint listed? Not Design & Marketing or even Sales & Marketing. PowerPoint design (hey there’s the word “design”) is listed in Admin Support!!

What is a Teleprompter?

A teleprompt system allows a speaker to look naturally into the audience/camera while hiding the fact that they are reading a script.

The most common telepromptor equipment I see for my shows are “presidentials”, which have a small profile and do not pull the audiences attention from the presenter.

The presenter supplies their script to the teleprompt operator, who then runs it in a word-processor like application that allows the script to be scrolled at the pace of their speaking (this is a very simplified explanation/description).

Express Card Sizes – Which One Are You?

There are some great new products coming out that make use of laptop PCI Express Cards – such as SD card readers or the ultra cool MoGO Bluetooth mouse/presentation remote.

But the confusion comes from the fact that there are actually 2 “standards” for express cards, each a different size and they look similiar to the older PC Card. An important note is that the express card 34 will fit and work in the larger express card 54 slot.

So for reference here are the 3 cards, just match up shape/size to the plastic sleeve in your laptop and you know what to purchase.

I Create A Lot Images – But Not As Many As It Use To

I had a conversation recently with someone that referenced a post I did back in June (It Takes A Lot Of Images). I showed this capture of my prepared images for 1 presentation:

There is a lot there, especially considering it was all for a 90 minute meeting. But my point is that if we go back to PPT 2000 the number of images would easily be twice as many. Back to PPT XP/2003 it would have at a minimum a 3rd more.

PPT XP/2003 with the semi-transparency features eliminated a large number of accent graphics that needed to be prepared in Photoshop and imported. Now with PPT 2007 I now do a lot of the image preparation (custom bevels, strokes, reflections, shadows, etc.) right in PowerPoint. So with each new version I accomplish more working directly in PPT, minimize the production time and have more material for tutorials and tips for ThePowerPointblog!

Using PPT 2007 Webcast (Nov 18)

Just some advance notice (got some feedback on giving late notice for my last webcast), that on Tuesday, November 18 I will be doing a 1 hour webinar on developing presentations with PPT 2007.

This is an intermediate level overview of working with the new Ribbon interface, taking advantage of the new graphic features for images-text-charts. All while creating a real-world presentation.

Office 2003 Microsoft Support

OOPS – I HAD A TYPO, WHICH IS CORRECTED NOW (2014, not 2007)
I know there are a lot of people out there still using PPT 2003. This was very evident when talking with people at PPTLive last week. And just as way of record, all of my computers have both PPT 2003 and PPT 2007 installed.

So for all of us PPT 2003 users, here is some important news and dates Microsoft announced last week:

1. Support for PowerPoint 2003 will end October 14, 2008 unless you have upgraded to SP3 (so this means you will need SP3 to install any updates after the middle of this month). SP3 for Office 2003 can be downloaded for free from Microsoft’s site.

2. Support for PowerPoint 2003 is slated to end in April 2014 (so this means no further service packs or updates will be developed and distributed after this date).

Office 2007 Feedback Page

Hmmm, so as a Microsoft PowerPoint MVP you would think at least I would know of a Microsoft Feedback Page for Office 2007.

But the truth is I just recently discovered this (along with other PPT MVPs). I can say that development and planning for the next version are underway at Microsoft, and that for previous versions the number of incidents reported or requests received did make a difference in the features updated, added, or removed. So if you encounter a bug or have a feature you would like to see in future versions I am guessing this is your best tool of getting that info to Microsoft!

PowerPoint eConvention

So what is an “eConvention”? Well, Shawn Toh of PowerPoint Heaven, also a PowerPoint MVP based in Singapore has created an online convention specifically for PowerPoint designers.

September 1-26 (now) is open for anyone to review the entries and vote. Categories are Animation, Artwork, Game and Broadcast. Some are downloadable presentations, some are viewable on YouTube movies – all are very impressive!

Then on Sept. 27 the eConvention comes to a close with all of the award winners posted.

Check out the entries, and how to submit your own entry, here.
