Knowledge Does Not Equal Design

I had a recent conversation while updating a series of presentations that I found very insightful. The conversation was along these lines:

Client – Thank you for updating all of our presentations, making them look consistent and just ‘better.’

Troy – Thank you for the opportunity to assist.

Client – I can see the ‘graphic designers touch’ over what our engineers do.

Troy – Well, after I actually figure out and interpret what the intended message of the slide is, my biggest goal is to bring focus to it.

Client (and this was the key to the whole conversation) – You know, our people have taken lots of classes on how to use PowerPoint, but there is a big difference between knowing how to add things to a slides, and knowing how to design a good layout.

Over the next few days I will pull some before-and-after examples that focus on redesigning the visual layout of the slide.

Desk Space – again

PowerPoint for a corporate event can require a lot of computers. In this case it was a primary and backup for the main screen, another for a logo and countdown when the IMAG screen was not on camera, and one additional for production work. Deskspace becomes an issue when you show up and have only been allocated 4 feet of table…

Morning Nutrition Is A Must

PowerPoint can be very time consuming – up before anyone else and ending after all have gone. This past week one of Lori’s co-workers on a large show “helped” her by supplying fresh Florida (we were working in Florida) Orange Juice for breakfast as she was too busy to get any… thanks Chris!

Allocating Desk Place

Setting up a mobile graphics office is sometimes a challenge on a smaller table/desk. At this recent show I was literally stacking computers two deep to get all of the graphics horsepower within reach.

Of course there is always room for an espresso drink (see #2)!

Seating for 2,500+ Please

I spent last week in Las Vegas working on, and running, the presentations for a large corporate event. Walking into a ballroom, before anyone is there, for a group this size is always “big.” Just a few quick photos of the main ballroom seating.

Note the ‘flying’ screens. With a room this large a second set of screens hang suspended above the audience so people in the back can read the slides.

Projecting with a Mirror

When space is limited things can get interesting. For this meeting rear projection was required, but there was less than 10′ behind the screen. Enter “the mirror.” This very specialized projector mount allowed the projector to be mounted at a near-vertical angle to shoot up to a large mirror, which then ‘projected’ onto the screen.

Oh The Beauty of Christmas Lights

After this past weekend I have to spend a few days putting away the holiday decorations once again :(. Things have been great around here, my girls are still at that magical age of believing in Christmas, I have eaten far to much and the whole block goes into decorating overload (which is perfect by me).

I hope 2007 looks bright and full of great things for you! I have no plans to change anything here at ThePowerPointBlog except to have even more content added throughout the year. Have a super week!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

365 Days ago was the exact same title – the very first post on ThePowerPointBlog! We have made it through 2006. Though things never seemed to slow down, I felt like a great variety and diversity of using PowerPoint occured throughout the year (who would have imagined even a few years ago an entire series dedicated to streaming media – all evolving out of PowerPoint requests!).

In doing a quick check I:
– Made 201 posts.
– Added 256 images
– Had approx. 25,000 unique visitors
– Had a ton of fun!!

Thanks for visiting The PowerPoint Blog – send an email any time (ideas, questions, encouragement, etc.)!

Oh the Places You’ll Go (#1)

One of the great things about corporate shows is traveling to exciting places. I discovered this at an event in Dallas, TX at the Anatole resort. On the grounds they have a big section of the Berlin Wall for all to see!
