Oh My Eyes – Bad Diagram

Here is a slide from a recent show that just made me cringe (presentation was supplied, so I had no editing or design input).

It does show all of the important information. But it does not have a balanced/aligned layout. It is difficult to figure out the message, text is small, and it did not animate to help show the flow. And it was a background slide for over 5 minutes…

Office 2010 in 2010

Well it’s official. Steve Balmer commented earlier this week that the next version of Office will not be available there year, but next.

“Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, Microsoft Visio 2010, and Microsoft Project 2010 are scheduled to enter technical preview in the third quarter of 2009 and become available in the first half of 2010.”

Microsoft DreamSpark

FREE Microsoft software for High School and University students and administrators!

This unfortunately does not include MS Office and PowerPoint, but I just found out about this program and thought it was incredibly cool and needed as much attention as possible.

DreamSpark enables students to download Microsoft developer and design tools at no charge. MS is letting students worldwide download professional-level developer tools and design software. Visit the site for the details here.

Baaaad Slides

CIO.com has some really bad slides for all to see. Each has a little info about the origin of the slide. Not that I agree with all of the comments (I have seen worse), but it is a good use for 5 minutes of your day. Click here to see them all.

PPT Art – Captain Jack Sparrow

How is this PowerPoint art?

When it is created in PowerPoint with hundreds of autoshapes! Just the mustache is made up of what looks to be over 200 autoshapes (I stopped counting after 75)!

This incredible work by the UK’s Colin Neal can be downloaded from the PowerPointHeaven site. Look for the entry called “Captain Jack Sparrow.” Click here.

iStockphoto’s

The video is a bit of a commercial for the host, but I do like what Kelly Thompson, iStockphoto’s Vice President of Marketing has to say about images vs. bullets in presentations.

Watch the video here.

Pecha Kucha (Tonight)

Pecha Kucha is something that sounds fun and may be a great skill builder for presenters. Basically Pecha Kucha forces presenters to create an on-the-fly presentation. They are given a topic, 20 slides, and 20 seconds per slide. It was created in Tokyo, Japan in 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

If you are in the NorthEast, head over to the free Calypso Communications event in Portsmouth NH. Click here for a story outlining the event and Pecha Kucha.
