Bing!

Microsoft unvieled it’s new search engine that has received some high praise within the industry. And yesterday it was released to the world early!

Bing has a lot of new features and technology for a search engine. Two of my favorites are type in a company name and it gives all the standard results, but also a customer service phone number. The other is great thing is ThePowerPointBlog remaining #1 when searching “powerpoint blog”! (actually 1st result is an ad for MS Office, it is MS’s search engine…)

Office 2010 The Movie

Two things:
1. Microsoft is definitely showing they know how to have fun. Check out the movie trailer for the upcoming release of Office 2010 here.

2. Microsoft has officially announced a Technical Preview (aka ‘Beta’) of Office 2010 – so we are getting closer to the release date! It is a limited invitation program…

Zero-Day Exploit Patch for PowerPoint

Tuesday Microsoft closed a critical PowerPoint hole that that has been under attack since last month, which seems to have been directed at corporate computers to gain access to data. It did not affect PowerPoint 2007, but the patch is for PowerPoint 2000, XP, 2003, 2007, the PowerPoint Viewer, Office Compatibility Pack and Works. No Mac patch yet.

How big a deal was this? It was only the fourth time in the past 4 years that Microsoft has released just one security bulletin. To patch your computer, Run Windows Update (or you can wait for it to be part of an upcoming Automatic Update).

Microsoft DreamSpark

FREE Microsoft software for High School and University students and administrators!

This unfortunately does not include MS Office and PowerPoint, but I just found out about this program and thought it was incredibly cool and needed as much attention as possible.

DreamSpark enables students to download Microsoft developer and design tools at no charge. MS is letting students worldwide download professional-level developer tools and design software. Visit the site for the details here.

Who is Watson and Why is He Important to Microsoft?

In this case Dr. Watson is a debugger for Microsoft, not Sherlock Holmes assistant.

If Dr. Watson is running and a Windows application crashes, such as PowerPoint, it creates a report with technical information that Microsoft developers use to determine what caused the crash. The key is sending the data, which I have been promised is anonymous, to Microsoft.

After spending a few days with the PowerPoint developers at Microsoft last week, like it or not, Watson reports play a HUGE factor in what gets fixed, or updated. So submit those Watson reports whenever possible – they make a difference.

Microsoft CES Keynote(s)

Microsoft is definitely changing the direction and strategies of their software development. I really think the changes will make team projects, asset management and presentations (very excited about the next/future version of PowerPoint!).

Click here to view videos of the major MS Keynote addresses.
27:40 – 44:00 = Demo of Windows 7, Windows Live and Windows Mobile
1:10:00 – 1:19:00 = Overview of key trends and future software demo

And the super-wide, multi-screen staging is really impressive too!

Who Is Ric B ???

As we start off 2009 what better time to introduce one of the best people at Microsoft I interact with. For all that use PowerPoint you want to know and acknowledge at least one person at Microsoft – Ric B.

Ric Bretscheider has been at Microsoft for over 15 years with nearly all of that time spent on the PowerPoint development team (starting with the PowerPoint IV – PPT 2007 is version XII/12). He is the Lead Program Manager for PowerPoint and has been a huge influence in listening to end users and steering the program to address our real world needs (and if you don’t like PowerPoint – you would dislike it even more if it were not for the efforts of Ric B! )

Many contributed to his 15 year anniversary with presentations, notes and videos. This one is one of the few that made it to public domain and does a good job of giving a look at Ric B.
