A Look Back to 4:3

While perusing past blog posts, this one caught my attention just from the image in the post (original post on The PowerPoint blog here):

PowerPoint Template for HCV Research

First, it is a 4:3 aspect ratio, instantly dating it as an “old” project in today’s 16:9 world. But then I noted the date of the post: September 22, 2016. This is close to a decade ago (10 years!), but PowerPoint as an app at that time had changed to a 16:9 default slide with the release of PowerPoint 2013.

This PowerPoint template project we were highlighting in 2016 was an outlier, holding onto the legacy 4:3 aspect ratio. Perusing our project log, I found dozens of PowerPoint template projects in 2016, but only 7 were 4:3; all the others were 16:9 or wider (ultrawide presentations have been a part of the live event staging world for 20+ years!).

In 2017, there were again dozens of PowerPoint template projects in our project log. But this time I only noted only 4 as 4:3 aspect ratio templates (and 3 of those were for the same client as this template!).

This was a nice trip into the past of presentation design. The world is now 16:9… but the needs of a full-featured PowerPoint template remain the same.

A good PowerPoint template serves as a style guide available to everyone in the company, department, or event, setting the consistency standards for color scheme, fonts, and overall styling.

Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year – A Look Back to February 2022

With Pantone having just released their Color of the Year for 2025, the TLC Creative team has decided to look back at our Pantone 2022 Color of the Year tie-ins. Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year was #17-3938 Very Peri. And the TLC Creative design team created 4 free to use, full-feature PowerPoint templates inspired by the Very Peri color.

Pantone’s Color of The Year selection process:

  • Pantone Color of the Year started in 1999.
  • Each year Pantone has a global team of color experts that are not all Pantone employees.
  • Colors are recommendations based on anything and everything that influences color; entertainment, travel, lifestyles, etc. and a study of trends, but not a timely fad.
  • The process is generally identify, and agree, on a color. Then continue the process to determine the shade of that color.
  • Read this article on the Pantone website for more facts and information about the process.

Pantone released a series of color schemes centered on the Very Peri color of the year. The TLC Creative team created 4 PowerPoint templates inspired by the Pantone color schemes. Each is a full-feature PowerPoint template, FREE to download and use!

Wrapping This Series with Troy’s Favorite – Space Invaders!

The absolute classic arcade game (based on my childhood and stacks of Quarters spent at the local arcade) is Space Invaders!

Space Invaders was released in 1978, created by Tomohiro Nishikado. It is one of the earliest shooting games and the goal is to defeat waves of aliens with a laser cannon to earn as many points as possible. Above is the original promotional flyer for the video game and shows the title graphic was a bigger design element than the actual game play. The game title was designed based on the font ITC Machine.

Troy’s template integrates the game colors into the preset color scheme, has the iconic game name text treatment as vector art, and many of the actual game icons. Download the template free here:SpaceInvaders_16x9 Template
